Savoir-faire

Our fingers shape,our minds travel

At the Globe Sauter workshop, time stretches and unfolds in pursuit of the same goal: excellence and a job well done.

Far from standardised products, each piece that sees the light of day here is the fruit of a long artisanal process, where precision of gesture is combined with attention to detail and the use of quality materials. Beyond the object itself, it’s a vision of the world that we transmit: a motionless journey, an invitation to explore differently, to contemplate the passing of time with elegance and poetry.

Stages of
globe-making

  • Shaping

Each globe is formed from a sphere moulded with absolute precision. It is carefully crafted in plaster and must be perfectly smooth and balanced. Our craftsmen use tried-and-tested techniques to ensure an impeccable finish, with perfect symmetry and a uniform surface. This first stage is crucial because it is at this point that the globe comes to life and finds its harmony and presence.

  • Cartography

The globe is first and foremost a representation of the world. Our maps are designed with particular attention to geographical fidelity and aesthetics, thanks to NaturalEarth data and the creativity of our workshop.
Transformed into carefully calculated zones, the map is then printed on a special paper using pigment inks that offer exceptional richness.

  • Bonding

This is the crucial stage, the heart of the globe maker’s craft. Gluing a globe requires extreme precision, patience and a great deal of practice. Our craftsmen delicately assemble the spindles and complete their world tour with great care. We use a traditional glue, inherited from the skills of bookbinders and restorers of old books, to ensure that each globe stands the test of time without failing.

  • Colouring

This is the stage that brings our globes to life and makes them so unique. All the colouring is done using Sennelier extra-fine watercolours. At Globe Sauter, we have chosen this long and delicate process to reveal all the character of the globe and make it unique. This is when the magic happens: each sea, each relief is revealed in its most beautiful colours. To ensure that this magic lasts, several layers of varnish protect the colours and textures. Because a Sauter Globe is not intended to remain under glass, but to be explored with the eyes and hands, to be turned and contemplated…

  • Cabinetry

To showcase your Globe Sauter at its best, a beautiful stand that’s perfectly suited to it is the ideal solution. We select noble woods such as Jura oak and beech, which we then design, draw and craft in our workshop. This stand will accompany your globe as it becomes part of your history.

  • L’Atelier
    Globe Sauter

Behind the story of Globe Sauter is the story of Alain, a geography lecturer at the Sorbonne, who set himself a crazy challenge: to make globes, a skill that had been lost in France.

    Les palettes

Our colour palettes are the result of Alain Sauter’s travels and the light he has captured in the four corners of the world. They reflect the harshness of Arctic landscapes, the gentleness of faraway islands and the richness of lands steeped in history.
